Dolch sight words are frequently used English words compiled by Dr. Edward William Dolch. The vocabulary is based on statistics of reading from kindergarten to 2nd grade. So it's extremely important for young kids in initial words learning. It is also a famous wordlist to be assigned for memorization in American elementary schools.
Dolch sight words actually consist of two parts. At first, this was a list of the 220 most common English words, but no noun is in the list. Then Dr. Dolch added an additional list of 95 nouns in alphabetical order, which are the most frequently used nouns in children's reading books. Dolch sight words provide an excellent base for reading at an early age. Between 50% and 75% of all words used in school books, library books, newspapers, and magazines are a part of the Dolch vocabulary. Dolch word list isn't only a workload of 300 words, it's a first step to help kids start their school journey.
Because Dolch words are actually based on reading from kindergarten to 2nd grade, we strongly recommend finish all of them before 3rd grade, otherwise more or less will cause reading issues. For 3rd grade students, we suggest to study Fry instant words, which are based on usage from 3rd to 9th grade. The ideal learner of Dolch sight words should be in kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade, although we group them as 5 grades.
